Mental health awareness topic of Feb. 25 League of Women Voters panel discussion

The League of Women Voters of Larimer County and Touchstone Health Partners are co-sponsoring a panel discussion on the state of mental health and substance abuse in Larimer County on Feb. 25 in Fort Collins.

In 2011, Larimer County experienced an average of one suicide every six days and the leading cause was untreated or undiagnosed depression. It is estimated that 3 in 10 Coloradans need mental health or substance abuse treatment each year – more than 1.5 million people.

This panel will focus on the prevalence of mental health disorders in Larimer County and explore how these disorders impact our lives. The panelists will also touch upon how to recognize the symptoms and how the stigma surrounding these conditions continues to interfere with treatment and recovery. Additionally, information will be offered on where to get help and what remain as gaps in the available services in Larimer County. Time will be allowed for questions and answers.

The panelists are: Kathy Forrest, Assistant Chief Operations Officer, Touchstone Health Partners; Cheryl Olson, Immediate Past Chairperson of the Health District of Northern Larimer County’s Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse partnership; Melanie Voegli-Morris, Coordinator, Student Assistance Services, Poudre School District; Leader, Poudre School District Mental Health Team.

The event is Monday, February 25, 7 to 9 p.m. at The Coloradoan Meeting Room, 1300 Riverside Drive, Fort Collins.
