Metal thefts on the uptick in Larimer County

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to see regular reports of metal theft. In the first six weeks of the year, there have been seven reports of metal theft. In the last six months of 2011, a total of 16 metal thefts were reported. While all types of metals have been stolen, copper seems to be the primary target.

Construction companies and construction sites have always been prime targets for metal thieves, but the sheriff’s office is now seeing this expanded to include individual electricians, plumbers, farmers and other non-traditional victims.

Residents are urged to keep metallic items out of sight, locked up and securely stored when not in use. Appropriate fencing, locks, chains and alarm systems should be used when possible. Report suspicious persons or vehicles to law enforcement. They may be checking the area in preparation for a future theft. Put identification marks or labels on metallic items, especially tools. Even marking wire with spray paint can help prevent theft and aid in identifying it if it is stolen. Be sure to report all thefts and suspicious incidents to local law enforcement promptly.

Anyone with information regarding any crime should call the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office at 970-416-1985.
