Prescribed burn at Devil’s Backbone Open Space – Do Not Call 911

A prescribed burn is scheduled at Devil’s Backbone Open Space Thursday, Jan. 26 – Friday, Jan. 27. The purpose is to reduce the cover of exotic grasses, improve wildlife forage and habitat, and reduce fuel loads that could contribute to a wildfire. Fire is a natural disturbance factor in western grasslands and a prescribed burn is a safe, low-intensity fire that simulates lighting-strike fires or fires historically set by Native Americans.

Although hikers and bikers may see smoke, the 50-acre burn will be located on the west side of the open space and will not require trail or trailhead closures. Larimer County Rangers will roam between the Devil’s Backbone and Blue Sky trailheads to answer questions. Signs about the planned burn were installed at each trailhead in advance of the burn and were posted along Glade Road.
