Joseph Rovan is chair of the music department and teaches courses in computer music at Brown University in Providence, R.I. His sister, Joan Rovan, is senior graphic designer at Riverside Community College in Riverside, Calif., and also teaches class in using Photoshop. Every summer they come to Colorado to visit their mother, Patricia, and her husband Arturo Munoz, now 90, who have a special place on the Poudre River several miles west of Rustic.
Arturo and Patricia await the arrival of Joan and Joseph with great anticipation because that’s when the fun begins. For several summers now, the foursome has entertained themselves and a widening group of fans with their YouTube videos that parody current movie trailers.
This summer, in four days and for about a hundred bucks, they produced a 4-minute parody extravaganza: “Godzilla Attacks Poudre Canyon.”
“Every time we do one of these we get more elaborate,” Joseph said. There’s no holding back with costumes, special effects and scary audio. He and his sister look forward to creating these productions with as much pleasure as his mother and stepfather do. He enjoys sharing their work with his students.
Last summer “Beavernado,” a parody of the trailer for “Sharknado,” caused an Internet buzz. “Beavernado” came into being in response to the problems Patricia has with invading beavers.
