Tour Harvest "Pizza" Farm

What does it take to make a pizza? What are the ingredients that go into the favorite food of so many kids, and where do they come from and how do they grow? One of the most fun ways to find out is to pay a visit to the Pizza Farm at Harvest Farm in Wellington.

There, in a circular garden, sliced into eight triangular shapes as you would a pizza, visitors can see many of their favorite ingredients from juicy ripe tomatoes to a pen containing pigs that could well end up as pepperoni or ham. There are cows who provide cheese, a stand of wheat, olive trees, onions, peppers, garlic and herbs that become pizza toppings.

Harvest Farm is a place where men recovering from addictions live in a safe and nurturing environment while they work to change their lives. Part of their recovery involves caring for the animals and crops at Harvest Farm.

Another part of the men’s recovery is becoming comfortable interacting with all kinds of people and sharing with them the work they do on the farm. Tours of the farm offer real-life, hands-on experiences to all ages including a wagon ride around the 209-acre farm and a chance to try out a farm activity such as greenhouse operation, dairy production or interacting with small farm animals.

Tours are free but reservations are necessary and groups need to be at least 15 people. Groups up to 60 can be accommodated. Tours are offered Tuesdays through Fridays at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Aug. 13 to Sept. 13, and last about an hour. Guests are welcome to bring snacks or lunch and enjoy their food in the barn. The tour is wheelchair accessible and there is ample parking for buses. Preschoolers through senior citizens and school groups are welcome.

Harvest Farm is north of Wellington. From Interstate 25 go east at exit 278, then east to the frontage road and take it north to East County Road 66. Turn left (going west) and look for the Harvest Farm entrance on your right.
