Self-service technology expands on March 5 to allow cross-county transactions

Renewing your license plates in Colorado is about to get a lot easier. Beginning March 5, citizens in 12 Colorado counties will have the option to renew their vehicle registration at any of 20 self-service kiosks located in any of those participating counties.

Larimer has partnered with 11 other counties in accepting cross-county transactions on their Colorado MVExpress kiosks. “This is yet another innovative vehicle licensing customer convenience that Larimer County is proud to provide for its citizens; giving them the ease and convenience of renewing their license plates from kiosks located at multiple locations throughout the state,” said Clerk and Recorder Angela Myers. “Living in one county no longer has to limit your tag renewal options. If you work, go to school, or visit another participating county, you can use their kiosk to renew your registration and walk away with your tabs in minutes.”

The kiosks are available only to residents of Arapahoe, Adams, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas, El Paso, Freemont, Jefferson, La Plata, Larimer, Mesa and Weld counties. However, more counties may authorize kiosk transactions for residents later this year. You can locate your nearest kiosk at larimer.org/kiosk.

The kiosks are blue and yellow machines that look similar to an ATM. To use one, simply type your license plate number on the touch screen, or scan the barcode on your renewal postcard; then pay taxes and fees by check, credit or debit card. The kiosk will instantly print your receipt, vehicle registration and license plate tabs. Customers pay a $3 service fee for every vehicle renewed at a kiosk. This fee pays for the technology and is not assessed or retained by Larimer County.

Additionally, there is a $0.50 convenience fee to pay using a check, and a 2.15% fee to pay via credit or debit card.

If your vehicle requires an emissions test, you should complete it at least two business days before using a kiosk. If you have recently changed or updated your auto insurance, please wait 2-4 business days before using a kiosk to renew. If your grace period for your renewal has ended, you will not be able to renew at a machine and must appear in person at your county motor vehicle office.
