Obituary: Roger Sherman Thompson

Roger Sherman Thompson died March 25, 2015, at his home in Fort Collins, at age 82.

Roger lived a cowboy’s life with his purpose being to give glory to God by sharing the message of Jesus Christ. He touched many lives during his ministry through the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, he graduated in 1951 from Jesuit High School, attended Arlington College and received his teaching certification from East Texas State in Commerce, Texas.

Roger married Sandra Raish on Dec. 15, 1956, in Weatherford, Texas, and later married Patricia Honeyfield in 1969. They are the mothers of his six children.

He lived the life he wanted, from beginning to end. Roger was a rodeo cowboy, rodeo clown and photographer, magazine publisher, and author of “Cowboy Preacher.” He taught junior and senior high school, was an accomplished private pilot, and an actor and stuntman in such films as, “Hang ‘Em High.”

Roger was an artist in both oil and charcoal, sang and played the guitar, was a sheriff’s deputy, a volunteer firefighter/EMT, a school bus driver, a reporter for The Fence Post, and had a little ranch where he chose to live out his days.

Roger is survived by his six children: James Roger Thompson, twins Valerie Romo and Deborah Dodson, Lisa Davis, Holin Honeyfield and Audra Beth Thompson; his first wife and long-time friend, Sandra Thompson; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate his life was held March 31 at River of Life Fellowship in Wellington. He always said to celebrate him at death and not to cry because he is with his Lord.
