The City of Fort Collins’ Planning Department invites residents, businesses, property owners and others to share their ideas for downtown Fort Collins and the Old Town neighborhoods at a series of upcoming events that will help shape the future of each.
The city will host five walking tours of the downtown area, as well as a large evening event on July 13 to discuss the future of downtown Fort Collins. The downtown plan is a joint effort by the city, the Downtown Development Authority, the Downtown Business Association and the entire community.
The walking tours will take place over two days (July 9-10), each focused on a different downtown district. The purpose of these tours is to explore “what could become” of each of these areas in the next 10-20 years, including features that should be protected over time.
The July 13 event, entitled, “A New Vision for Downtown,” will begin with a presentation from Brad Segal on the direction Fort Collins is headed in relation to the rest of the state, country and world. Segal is regarded as an expert in global market trends and is a founding principal of Progressive Urban Management Associates, a Denver-based firm. The remainder of the evening will be dedicated to interactive polling and conversations with city staff and consultants on a range of topics, including urban design and development, arts and culture, transportation options and parking.
“How should we plan for the next 20 years, and how do we preserve what makes our downtown and Old Town neighborhoods unique?” said Cameron Gloss, planning manager for the City of Fort Collins. “We need the community’s help brainstorming ideas and discussing options. These events will be a fun and interactive opportunity to help shape the future of the historic areas of Fort Collins.”
In addition, the city’s Old Town Neighborhoods planning team will host a Visioning Open House on July 8 at First United Methodist Church (1005 Stover Street). This event will feature topics such as Old Town neighborhood character, land use and transportation. Citizens will have the opportunity to participate in an online survey and social media photo contest, as well as speak directly with city planners about the project.
The Old Town Neighborhoods Plan is a combined update of the East Side and West Side Neighborhoods Plans and will help establish a vision for the future. The plan will be used by neighbors, developers, boards and commissions and city staff to help guide neighborhood character, policies, investment and much more.
