High Park Fire — Day 16

Fort Collins felt rain for the first time in three weeks Sunday evening, but little was reported on the High Park Fire. The rain was accompanied by lightning and high winds out of the north after daytime temperatures reached triple digits in LaPorte.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Department reported that 57 additional homes have been lost in the Glacier View/Hewlett Gulch area, after the fire jumped to the north side of the Poudre Canyon on Friday afternoon. Fire crews spent Sunday reinforcing the line on the north side of the fire in the Glacier View area as well as mopping up and protecting structures throughout the fire. Glacier View will continue to be a focus Monday, when another red flag warning for high heat and strong winds will be in effect.

A small spot fire near Halligan Reservoir grew to approximately 2 to 3 acres before firefighters got a handle on it.

Daily citizens’ briefings will be held at 5 p.m. at the evacuation center at Cache La Poudre Middle School, 3515 W. County Road 54G in Laporte.

The High Park Fire is estimated at 83,205 acres — 130 square miles, the size of Lynchburg, Tenn. — with 45 percent containment. More than 2,000 fire personnel and two dozen aircraft are on scene, with more expected on Monday. The cost of fighting the fire to date is estimated at $29.6 million. Gov. John Hickenlooper has authorized $25 million in state funds to pay for the effort, and a FEMA grant has been approved to provide Colorado a 75 percent reimbursement of actual costs.

The Woodland Heights Fire in Estes Park is 100 percent contained after burning 27 acres and 22 homes. The Waldo Canyon Fire has burned 3,600 acres near Manitou Springs and remains uncontained at 10 p.m. Sunday.

The High Park Fire Disaster Recovery Center on the Colorado State University Campus at Johnson Hall is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Donation Collection Center at the Foothills Mall is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Go to helpcoloradonow.org for more information.
