The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit is seeking participants for this year’s National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5th. This will be the 31st year for the National Night Out campaign. The local event is sponsored by the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and Larimer County along with the cities of Fort Collins, Loveland and Estes Park all participate in this unique crime/drug prevention event for neighborhoods.
Each year, the National Night Out campaign aims to get local citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials to work together to help increase awareness of local and national crimes and educate residents on drug prevention tips. Over 15,000 communities from all 50 states in addition to U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide participate in the National Night Out. In addition to the crime and drug prevention awareness, the National Night Out aims to:
• Generate support, and encourage participating in, local anticrime programs
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and law enforcement-community partnerships
• Send a message to criminals to let them know neighborhoods are organizing and fighting back.
Neighborhoods can participate in the National Night Out in many ways, including having block parties, cookouts, flashlight walks, kid contests and youth programs. Larimer County Sheriff’s Office will be out and about to visit some of the local neighborhoods and educate the residents on crime prevention tips. These events have proven to be fun, effective and inexpensive ways to promote neighborhood spirit and law enforcement-community partnerships to encourage a safer county.
Neighborhoods or groups interested in participating in this year’s event should contact Barbara Bennett, Coordinator of the Sheriff’s Auxiliary Unit, at 970-682-0597. For additional information, or for tips on planning your neighborhood’s National Night Out, visit our website at larimersheriff.org.
