Many flood-impacted trails remain closed; Hewlett Gulch Trail reopens Dec. 18

The Hewlett Gulch Trail, closed following the September flood, will temporarily reopened by Dec. 18. There are icy areas along the trail due to saturated soils and higher-than-average water levels. Use extra caution. The trail is expected to reclose at spring runoff. Work on the trail will take place after that.

Much winter recreation across the Canyon Lakes Ranger District (CLRD) has been impacted due to the flood and hazardous tree removal projects. Long Draw Road remains closed; this includes closed to over-snow travel. Snowmobiling opportunities on the district are limited due to the reasons listed above and snow conditions. Many roads also seasonally close in December. Check the road status page for the latest at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/arp/roads.

A list of CLRD roads and trails closed due to the flood are depicted on the map available at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/arp/flood2013.

The Big Thompson Fishing Pier and the picnic areas along County Road 43 to Glen Haven were destroyed by the flood.

For those looking for snowshoe and cross country skiing opportunities, the Cameron Pass area at the top of the Poudre Canyon is a good place to go. Higher elevation trails have more snow cover and were typically less impacted by the flood and remain open.
