Meet firefighters and learn Firewise facts as wildfire season heats up

Although any firefighter will tell you, “It’s always fire season,” this year’s warm and dry winter has upped the ante as summer approaches. To promote wildfire mitigation and preparedness, the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on Saturday, May 6.

Firefighters and Firewise Facts will be available from 10-2 p.m. at Firehouse No. 1, 11835 Rist Canyon Road. The annual Preparedness Day is in cooperation with the National Fire Protection Agency and State Farm Insurance.

The 2017 Open Firehouse will feature experts in fire mitigation, defensible space and fire-resistant landscaping. Attendees can meet their volunteer firefighters and learn about fire engines and equipment. All residents living in the RCVFD service area are encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public, and will include games for kids.

The goal of a Firewise Community is to reduce the loss of life and property by individuals taking responsibility for being knowledgeable about, and taking steps toward, wildfire prevention and mitigation. The individuals work together in a community effort to strengthen defenses and lessen the destructive effects of wildfire.

The RCVFD is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and receives no federal or state tax money. Supported 100 percent by donations, the all-volunteer department depends on community involvement, engagement, and financial support. Donations can be sent to RCVFD Treasurer, PO Box 2, Bellvue, CO 80512 or made by PayPal at RCVFD.org. RCVFD is also a participant in the Amazon Smile program.
