It comes as no surprise that critics of The Motet are few and far between. This shit is just too good. The self-titled seventh release of the Boulder-based group simply demonstrates that not only is funk still alive and well, but progressing beautifully. An organic modernity envelopes the album while still drawing heavily and purely from the raw sound of old school funk. The development of The Motet is undeniable after ten years of work toward the revival and evolution of modern funk music, and this release simply encapsulates every inch of that movement, every sold out show and every sweaty dancer up to this point in Motet history. Like one of their live performances, The Motet continues to remind us that there is little that funk can’t fix. Head up to Red Rocks on July 5 or Camp Euphoria on July 12 to dance.
