Although based in Los Angeles, Welcome to Winter has strong roots in Colorado. Half of the band, Shaley Scott, received much of her music training at the Colorado Academy of the Arts and, for a very brief time, at Colorado State University, while her future songwriting partner, Anthony Lavin, played lead guitar in the Filthy Souls, an English-based rock band. Their freshman release, a self-titled, five-song EP, showcases both Scott’s and Lavin’s talented vocal range and harmonies. The sound is built upon an acoustic indie rock that mirrors the styles of artists such as Damien Rice and Glen Hasnard. “Style,” however, differentiates itself from the rest of the EP with an up-tempo beat and an extremely catchy melody that may find itself in one of the high-spirited Target commercials.
