Local science writer and illustrator Gary Raham, author of 17 titles of science fact and science fiction, reveals all at 1 p.m. on March 10, at Old Firehouse Books in Fort Collins. During “Confessions of a Time Traveler,” he will revisit some of his fossil-hunting explorations in Colorado, read from recent works, share tips with aspiring writers and illustrators, and showcase a sampling of his artwork.
Curl up in a comfortable chair at Old Firehouse Books and wander with him along the Dinosaurs’ Last Seashore in Colorado. Words and illustrations transform fossilized bones and shells back into the living, and often ferocious, creatures that lived beneath the waves of a Cretaceous ocean 67 million years ago. A mysterious time traveler, known only as “J,” wanders these shores looking for unique creatures that helped transform the dinosaurs’ world into the vistas of mountain meadows and prairies we enjoy today.
“A Singular Prophecy,” a young adult science fiction adventure, tells an even more imaginative tale of young Ryan Thompson, a paleontologist who finds an alien artifact hidden among the bones of a fossil sea monster. His touch triggers contact with an alien still desperately intent on transforming Earth’s biosphere into a form suitable for occupation by her own species. Yet, once together, Ryan and Siutiasa find that their union has created something truly spectacular — an entity capable of changing the fate of an entire universe.
Both books, published by Biostration, a local, award-winning company interested in the creative intersection of science, education and interpretive illustration, are available for purchase and signing after the presentation.
Visitors to Old Firehouse Books can expect to learn a few things, too — like how to draw a dinosaur and construct a weird, but believable, alien species.
