Wellington Middle School’s wrestling team topped off an undefeated 2013 wrestling season by capturing the Poudre School District championship. Six of the team members took first place in their events.
The team also had an undefeated season and took the district championships in 2012.
The 2013 win means that the traveling trophy will spend another year in the Wellington Middle School trophy case.
According to “wrestling mom” Shannon Lamb, the team has had a special interest in earning the trophy.
“Until 2012 it had been close to 20 years since Wellington had taken the district championship,” Lamb said. “The trophy is specially significant because it is named in honor of Wellington wrestling coach Bob Drysdale, who died in an auto accident several years ago.”
Lamb credits the team’s success with encouragement and coaching by substitute teacher Mark Gabbert and opportunities to increase wrestlers’ skills through Fort Collins city recreation program and Fort Collins Wrestling Club.
Keeping the Bob Drysdale traveling trophy close to home is an added incentive for the team to do well.
