Publishers Letter: February 2019

It’s the month of love. But it’s up to us to give this month its special meaning — and in the world we live in when life can seem so impersonal you might agree that’s a very good idea.

Consider the many types of love that serve to make your life worthwhile — your romantic partner — of course! But what about your kids? Your parents? Your siblings? Friends you always call first when the news is good or bad? And that neighbor who is ready to lend a hand, loan you that hedge clipper or watch your house while you are away!

We may lack the right words to express just how much these important people mean to us but we don’t have to leave it at that.

This February dare to touch the hearts of the many people who are important to you. Here’s a few ways to “ace” this:

1) Take a moment to consider the individuals for whom you are most grateful — then, consider WHY. Gratitude has a way of getting us in touch with our deepest feelings, sometimes feelings we barely knew we had.

2) Write a Thank You note or letter to someone who has made a significant difference in your life — a teacher, a parent, a mentor — someone whom you know in your heart of hearts added immeasurably to your life and wellbeing. For most people it will be the first time they received anything even remotely like that.

3) Visit a card shop and read the inventive comments of experienced writers — take a few notes. Then buy a blank card and write that sentiment you just cribbed, adjusted to make it your own. A handwritten card is treasured — some we save for years.

4) Have a neighbor who always watches your home while you are away? Get them some flowers and deliver them yourself — or if you have small children take them with you and have them hand the flowers to that special person explaining to them beforehand why this person matters.
