I saw Qbala for the first time at Hodi’s in February of 2011. She was opening for Del The Funky Homosapien, and my high school mind was blown by her energy and lyricism. Years later, after a number of shows and releases, my respect for Qbala as an artist has increased exponentially. Battle Cries only affirms this respect, her growth and extremely hard work is evident, as well as the usual confidence and comfortability in her music. No line is wasted, the lyrics perceptive and clever, sometimes personal and sometimes humorous, though consistently bold and poetic. Big props to Kind Dub in the production studio, throwing out a clean sound and some incredible beats (check out “Music Language”). Be there for a live show, try a limited Pateros Creek Battle Cries Stout, and listen to the EP itself, as Qbala is an artist very deserving of recognition.
