Labor Day weekend marks the official end of summer, and folks traditionally celebrate with picnics, pancakes and pony rides. Check out these events for your last hurrah of the season.
Rist Canyon Mountain Festival
This popular festival takes place on Sept. 4 in Rist Canyon, eight miles west of Bellvue, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The prime attraction is the 16th Annual Richard Schmid fine art auction, which draws more than 100 nationally known artists for an “under the big top” sale. Founding artist Richard Schmid has donated an unprecedented three pieces for this year’s event.
Both live and silent auctions will keep bidders busy. Preview begins at 10 a.m., with auctions starting at 1 p.m. To view artwork, go to www.RichardSchmidAuction.com.
In addition to the art auctions, there are dozens of booths selling a variety of crafts, plus non-stop entertainment. This year’s live music acts include Jill Brzezicki, Cowtown, Cornerstone and Jubal and Monica Colbi. The Rocky Mountain Belly Dancers will also perform, and there are activities for children from pony rides to inflatables.
Other favorites are the used book sale, vintage car show, great food and free ice cream.
Both admission and parking are free. All proceeds benefit the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, an all-volunteer organization that was the first responder on last spring’s Crystal Fire.
Red Feather Lakes
The annual Fire Day Celebration in Red Feather Lakes is set for Sept. 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event features arts and crafts, a fire truck parade, silent auction, bake sale and activities for children. There’s also a barbecue lunch at the POA building, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The last bingo session of summer is also on Sept. 3, 7 p.m. at the POA building.
The Red Feather Lakes Lions Club will host a pancake breakfast on Sept. 4, 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the POA building. Start the day with pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice and coffee. Donations will be accepted.
Crystal Lakes
The annual Crystal Lakes Arts & Crafts Sale is set for Sept. 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Base Station. The event will be in the water and sewer building and the fire station this year to accommodate more artists. Shop for jewelry, pottery, photography, woodworking, pine needle baskets, emu oil, greeting cards and more.
In addition, the Crystal Lakes Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a silent auction and sell fire department sweatshirts, hats and popcorn. To donate items for the silent auction, please call 970-881-3595.
The Community Fund will hold a bake sale at the event.
Glacier View
The Glacier Gals will sponsor a pancake breakfast on Labor Day, Sept. 5 at Gate 8, Glacier View Meadows. The event will run from 7 to 11 a.m., and donations will be accepted. Info: 493-0399.
