Lots to do on Labor Day weekend

Labor Day weekend marks the official end of summer, and folks traditionally celebrate with picnics, pancakes and pony rides. Check out these events for your last hurrah of the season.

Rist Canyon Mountain Festival

This popular festival takes place on Sept. 4 in Rist Canyon, eight miles west of Bellvue, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The prime attraction is the 16th Annual Richard Schmid fine art auction, which draws more than 100 nationally known artists for an “under the big top” sale. Founding artist Richard Schmid has donated an unprecedented three pieces for this year’s event.

Both live and silent auctions will keep bidders busy. Preview begins at 10 a.m., with auctions starting at 1 p.m. To view artwork, go to www.RichardSchmidAuction.com.

In addition to the art auctions, there are dozens of booths selling a variety of crafts, plus non-stop entertainment. This year’s live music acts include Jill Brzezicki, Cowtown, Cornerstone and Jubal and Monica Colbi. The Rocky Mountain Belly Dancers will also perform, and there are activities for children from pony rides to inflatables.

Other favorites are the used book sale, vintage car show, great food and free ice cream.

Both admission and parking are free. All proceeds benefit the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, an all-volunteer organization that was the first responder on last spring’s Crystal Fire.
