The Hewlett Fire in Poudre Canyon has grown to more than 5,000 acres overnight, and is now within a half-mile of the southeast corner of the Glacier View subdivision.
In an update at 8 a.m., the U.S. Forest Service said that shifting winds had caused the fire to grow east to Seaman Reservoir and north toward Glacier View, although it remains to the west of the North Fork of the Poudre River and north of Highway 14. Approximately 329 firefighters are fighting the blaze in rugged terrain 10 miles west of the junction of Colorado Highway 14 and U.S. Highway 287, which remains only 5 percent contained.
No evacuations have been ordered at this time, but notifications have been sent to residents within a 1-mile radius of Mount Mahogany and Gordon Creek Lane, the Bonner Peak and Bonner Springs subdivision, and 1 mile on either side of Highway 14 between mile markers 110 and 115. Residents in these areas should be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.
The Larimer County Sheriff’s Department requests that anyone who decides to leave prior to an evacuation notice hang a white towel on their front door to alert emergency responders.
The sheriff’s department and the Colorado State Patrol will be enforcing no parking along Highway 14 in the area of the fire beginning today, to keep the area clear for emergency personnel.
