According to the Eighth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Joe Sanchez was sentenced after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder after deliberation and attempted first-degree assault causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon. The plea agreement was secured on February 9.

The charges stem from an October 19, 2024, incident on Butch Cassidy Drive in Fort Collins, where Fort Collins Police Services responded to reports of gunfire. Officers found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds, including one man who had been shot in the chest.

Investigators determined the shooting followed an argument involving Sanchez and others. The victim was reportedly assaulted before attempting to flee in a vehicle. Authorities said a shot was fired at the vehicle before Sanchez turned and fired multiple rounds at the victim, striking him once.

Despite serious injuries, the victim survived after being transported to a local hospital. Detectives gathered witness statements, reviewed video evidence, and conducted a detailed investigation that led to Sanchez’s arrest.

As part of the sentence, Sanchez must also pay restitution to cover the victims’ ongoing medical treatment and other losses.

District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin emphasized the broader impact of such crimes, stating that gun violence creates lasting fear and affects entire communities. He noted the importance of accountability and expressed gratitude that the victims survived.

For Northern Colorado residents, the case underscores the continued importance of community safety efforts and the role of law enforcement and the courts in responding to violent incidents.
