The Food Bank for Larimer County is asking community members to purchase and donate frozen turkeys to offset the growing needs of those less fortunate in our community.
During the holiday season, the Food Bank collects donated frozen turkeys and complementary side ingredients and partners with dozens of community agencies who transform these raw goods into Thanksgiving and holiday food baskets, which the agencies then distribute to their qualified clientele.
“Last month, we provided food to over 13,000 people through our Food Share food pantry program. Today, we already have 1,400 turkey orders for this holiday season, which will continue to grow as we get closer,” said Chuck Gill, Food Bank for Larimer County. “Help from the community is vital to us to meet this growing need.”
This year, due to increased need, the Food Bank is asking the community to help them meet their goal of 2,500 frozen turkeys collected for individuals and families in Larimer County at-risk of hunger. In 2010, the Food Bank supplied over 20,000 pounds of turkeys to 20 member agencies who in turn made Thanksgiving and holiday baskets for their clients.
Frozen turkeys and hams are especially needed before Thanksgiving Day. All donations will be accepted through December 16 at the Food Bank for Larimer County. Turkey donations can be dropped off at the main distribution warehouse at 1301 Blue Spruce Drive in Fort Collins, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the north side of the building.
In addition to frozen turkeys, other non-perishable foods are also needed for holiday distribution at the Food Bank. These items include canned pumpkin, canned sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, canned green beans or corn, boxed stuffing, and bagged nuts (walnuts/sliced almonds).
Approximately 13,000 people seek food assistance each month from both Food Share locations marking the highest demand for food services at the Food Bank in its 27th year history. For more information, please visit www.foodbanklarimer.org.
