Letter: Please attend the Nov. 4 Poudre School District roundtable

Editor:

On Tuesday, November 4, Dr. Sandra Smyser, the superintendent of the Poudre School District, will be the guest speaker at the Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce Roundtable meeting. This meeting will be held at 7:30 a.m. in the meeting room of the First National Bank in Wellington.

I want to make a special invitation to all members to attend this presentation. At an earlier meeting with PSD officials, it was pointed out that the school district does not now have a single point of contact that represents Wellington’s interests and concerns about the operation of schools in our town. Because PSD board meetings are held at the same time as our Town Board of Trustees’ meetings, it is impractical for any Trustees to regularly attend the PSD board meetings.

Growth projections for Wellington indicate that our existing schools will very quickly become inadequate to serve the population, so PSD’s long-range plans must recognize the need to expand their services in Wellington and all of the northern areas of the district, which extends all the way to the Wyoming border.

There is now interest in forming an ad hoc Wellington school interest committee, with the responsibility of formulating policy positions for Wellington and establishing regular communications with the school district. We would like to use the November 4 meeting as an initial organizing opportunity for this committee. Trustee Matt Michel has already come forward to lead this initiative, and will coordinate between the committee and the Town Trustees.

If you have any interest in participating or providing input to this ad hoc committee, please make every effort to attend the November 4 meeting. If you are interested, but it is not possible to attend, please email your name and phone number to wellingtonareachamber@gmail.com and ask to be included in announcements pertaining to the ad hoc school committee.

Please be aware that although the Chamber is helping to initiate the organization of this committee, it will not be a committee of or an activity sponsored by the Chamber. At some point, it may be officially recognized by the Trustees as a town committee. Please take every opportunity to share this invitation with any friends or acquaintances in the greater Wellington area that might have any interest in improving and promoting the already excellent schools that we have.
