Letter: We live in a Constitutional Republic

Editor:

I read in the recent Wellington Weekly that Peter & Diana Pronko are grateful for “…residing in a living democracy where voices can be heard and are responded to.”

I find this confusing because the United States is a Constitutional Republic. So I assume they reside in another country? We choose our elected representatives and hope, with God’s guidance, they make educated, non-self-serving, sound decisions. A democracy is merely two wolves and a sheep voting on what is for dinner.

I hope America abandons the progressive ideas of an Aleister Crowley mentality of “Do What Thou Wilt” as long as you have the votes needed. I thank God that he gave our slave owning founding fathers the wisdom to add the Bill of Rights to the US Constitution since they never wanted to suffer the same abuses as they themselves forced onto slaves and native Americans.

As an example of a Republic vs. a democracy: The U.S. is the “only” country that allows the people to elect the highest law enforcement officer: Sheriff. This person is responsible to only the voters of the county and is an important buffer against unjust laws. It is an important dangerous usurpation to “hire” a head law enforcement official because a small group “votes” it is in their best interest.

Please read the Federalist Papers and I believe you will come to realize that a democracy is the surest path to a dictatorship since all rights and freedom will progressively be voted away in the interest of a few and no amount of democratic voting will ever get freedom returned.
