Local artist Cathy Morrison illustrates children's book

More than 20 years ago Cathy Morrison forsook a career in graphic design to concentrate on what she loves best: illustrating children’s books. It took a while before she made a switch from colored pencils to digital drawing, but when she did she became a master.

If You Love Honey, Nature’s Connections by Martha Sullivan is Morrison’s third book for Dawn Publications based in Nevada City, Calif. The company specializes in children’s picture books about nature. The story takes readers on a beautifully illustrated adventure through the natural world, pointing out the connections between bees that produce honey, flowering plants, butterflies and other insects and earthworms. The repetitive pattern of the story has a special appeal for young readers.

The back of the book provides a wealth of factual material useful for classroom teachers. The accuracy and sensitivity of Morrison’s illustrations reflect her love of the natural world and the inspiration she derives from living in the Colorado hills and working in a studio with a stunning wide view of the landscape before her.

The book is an 8.5″ by 11″ paperback format with slick, high-quality paper. It is suggested for ages 4 to 9 and is available at local bookstores and on Amazon for $8.95.
