Poudre School District board selects new superintendent

The Poudre School District Board of Education selected Sandra Smyser as superintendent of PSD schools.

The board voted 4-2 to hire Smyser and also voted 6-0 in a separate motion to support the new superintendent.

The board named the new superintendent during a special board meeting March 11 following a round of second interviews with the superintendent finalists. Smyser accepted the job, contingent on a successful contract negotiation.

Smyser has been the superintendent of Eagle County School District since 2008. Prior to her current position of superintendent of Eagle County School District, Smyser was the Interim Superintendent in Steamboat Springs School District, Superintendent of Las Virgenes Unified School District in California, Superintendent of Carpinteria Unified School District in California and Superintendent/Chief Business Official for Solvang Elementary School District in California.

Smyser’s education includes a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Special Education and Elementary Education from the University of Maryland; a Masters of Arts degree in Education and Spanish from the University of South Carolina; and a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of California, Riverside.

Smyser will replace Nancy Wright, who has been serving as the interim PSD superintendent since Jerry Wilson resigned from the position last summer.

Superintendent candidates participated in public interviews with the board and community committees, as well as a community forum.
