Prescribed burn at Kingfisher Point Natural Area today

The City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department is planning to implement a prescribed burn at Kingfisher Point Natural Area in east Fort Collins on Feb. 9, though conditions may dictate scheduling changes. Visitors on the Poudre Trail or at the natural area may notice smoke and equipment. No closures are planned. Updates will be posted on the Natural Areas trail conditions page, www.fcgov.com/naturalareas/status.php

Natural Areas Department staff will closely monitor smoke dispersal to avoid impacts to trail users, motorists and residents. To mitigate concerns, staff will only burn under advantageous conditions.

The Natural Areas Department conducts prescribed fires to achieve four primary objectives:
• Reduce hazardous fuel buildup
• To improve weed control and restoration of native flora
• Create the habitat structure required by target wildlife species
• To maintain the role of fire as a natural disturbance. The use of fire as a management tool is an integral element of restoring the function of grasslands.

Concerns or questions regarding prescribed fire can be directed to the Natural Areas Department’s front desk at 970-416-2185.
