Red Feather Lakes Community Library update

Red Feather Lakes Community Library is marking Oct. 16-22 as National Friends of the Library Week, an effort to both celebrate and appreciate what our local Friends Group – Friends of Red Feather Library — does and has done for the library.

The Friends of Red Feather Library is a separate, nonprofit organization that is committed to fostering, expanding and communicating library services within the greater Red Feather Lakes area. They are a voice for library services. They are a proponent for library funding, and exert annually considerable effort in fundraising activities, including book and other media sales, the staffing of exchanges along the annual Wild West Relay race, hosting the Christmas silent auction of the Debbie Joncas Dollhouse creation and other activities through the year. They host as well a mean annual membership meeting at Western Ridge Resort in June and a well-attended midsummer social.

Speaking of a real recycling project, the Friends have for years collected donated used books and have sold those on the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends with part of the proceeds used to purchase new materials for the library shelves.

Led by current president Susie Trabant, this is a hands-on do-it group that makes a difference in the community. And you can as well. Annual memberships begin at $10 and that’s a small price to pay to join a large-hearted local service organization.

And, we have several upcoming programs this month that we’re a bit excited about.

Ever dreamed of riding the Trans-Siberian Railroad? Well, Jon and Judith Liebman have both dreamed it and done it and will be at the library Saturday, Oct. 1 to relate their experiences. Eight time zones on the train. All aboard at 11 a.m.

Join us for a free movie for adults, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Title yet to be determined, but trust us, you’re going to love it — or your money back.

We’ll be offering the second fall Teen Zone Saturday, Oct. 8, 3 to 5 p.m., signups strongly encouraged. For the younger set the second Elementary School Event will be Friday, Oct. 21, 1 to 2:30 p.m., our Halloween-themed party for the season.

Last but not least: Poetry Workshop and Reading, conducted by Sommer Browning and co-sponsored by the library and the Red Feather Writers Group, 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29. Ms. Browning is a “librarian and poet” residing in Denver but conducting statewide poetry writing and readings workshops.

October showing in Ruth’s Gallery: Timi Burdette displays “Temari,” beautiful handcrafted balls originating in Japan.

Another monthly offering from your library in Red Feather Lakes.
