When winter boredom becomes a “There’s nothing to do!” mantra, or the gang just needs a refreshing change of pace, Weld County can help. One great place to visit is Cozy Cow Dairy, a locally-owned, award-winning business.
Located just south of Windsor, the brainchild of owner Caille Gash welcomes visitors to observe Gash’s fascinating cheese making process through big windows. Her sheep’s milk cheeses won two second-place awards in August 2014 from The American Cheese Society. More than 240 cheese companies had submitted 1685 products in the annual competition.
Raw sheep’s milk from Irish Cream Sheep Dairy in Bushnell, Nebraska becomes delicious finished products (marketed under the name Coturnix Creamery) at Cozy Cow’s Weld County processing facility.
At its farm store, visitors can both observe the fascinating process and purchase tasty products such as a variety of handcrafted cheeses, bottled milk and ice cream. Plus, Cozy Cow is the only source of fresh cheese curds along the Front Range. A detailed description of the product line can be viewed online at www.cozycows.com.
Gash noted that all types of people enjoy the fresh dairy items and touring the processing facility– people who grew up eating cheese curds, those who want to patronize local businesses, parents who prefer a minimally-processed milk for their children, and seniors who want the same cream-top milk they enjoyed as kids.
Cozy Cow Dairy is located at 28607 CR 17 in Windsor. Store hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10-6 and 12-6 on Sundays. The facility is closed on Mondays. To watch milk processing, stop by on a processing day. Updates on those dates can be found on Cozy Cow’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/cozycowdairy, or by calling the dairy at (970) 686-6960.
