Wellington Library update for Nov. 2016

Spending time with our youth is beneficial to them and to us. It’s good to be involved with our youth, besides telling them to get off your lawn! It keeps us young and it brings positive interaction to a person who maybe doesn’t receive much positive interaction from adults. A few weeks ago we had the pleasure at the library to have Eyestone and Rice Basecamp come over. We were very impressed with the staff and the children we met those two days. I hope they had as much fun as we did.

Spending time with these kids, reading a book to them, doing a craft and enjoying a beautiful fall day together was life affirming. So find a way to share some of your time with a child. Sometimes it’s the simple things that can fill our hearts with laughter.

I have new neighbors and I noticed them out in the greenbelt area in front of our house with their children raking leaves. I thought maybe I should go tell them that the HOA takes care of that, but then I noticed they were jumping in the big piles of leaves they had gathered! A simple thing that was bringing them joy and bringing joy to me also. Youth does not have to be wasted on the young. Fun has no age limit.

The library will be starting its annual “Food for Fines” program November 1st. For every can of food donated we will take a dollar off your fines. The food is then donated to the Wellington Food Bank so make sure your items are not expired.

The library will be helping a local good samaritan gather coats and winter items for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Used is fine, but please make sure they are in usable condition (zippers work, no holes or big stains). Basically any size coat; little kids all the way up through teens. Please try to get your items to the library before November 18th.

Our Storytimes for the month of November are the 8th and the 22nd at 11 a.m. We are reading and crafting about Minions and Thanksgiving owls respectively. The WPL Book club meets December 1st to discuss, “Shakespeare Saved My Life” by Laura Bates. The WPL Friends Group meets on November 7th at 4:30 p.m. And thank you for all the great book donations!

Start filling in your calendar with holiday fun by adding the Library Park Tree Lighting at 6:30 p.m. on December 2nd. The Eyestone Choir will be singing and the Wellington Seniors are serving hot chocolate and cookies. It’s a great time to visit with Santa (possibly clear up any misunderstandings that are keeping you off the “Nice List”). The Wellington Public Library will be closed Friday, November 11 to honor Veterans Day. And for Thanksgiving we will be close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday November 23 and will remain closed until November 28. Please take this time to reflect on the lives of our brave military. We hope you all have a very happy Thanksgiving.
