Community Band begins rehearsals, welcomes new members

The Wellington Community Band kicks off its second season with a practice at 7 p.m. on June 1 at Wellington Methodist Church, 8251 Wellington Blvd. The band will practice every Monday night through June 29 in preparation for Wellington’s Fourth of July Parade. Following the parade, the band will assemble in Centennial Park for a performance of patriotic music.

“We love to play Sousa marches, so expect several of those,” said Craig Johnson, the band’s communications liaison and euphonium player.

The band was formed last year, specifically to play in the Fourth of July Parade. Linda Anderson, a former music teacher and band leader, directs the band. It consists of about 20 players ages 10 through 83. Uniforms consist of polo shirts with the band’s logo and jeans. But for more formal occasions, they don black outfits.

The band performed three concerts during its first full season. Following its Fourth of July performance, the band played for Wellington’s Harvest Festival. In early December 2014, the band played during the traditional Wellington Chili Supper. In April, it played a concert at the Wellington Community Church as a fundraiser.

“New members are always welcome,” Johnson said. “We have a special need for percussion and saxophone players, but everyone is welcome.”
