Red Feather Lakes Community Library: September update

September in the mountains brings cooler temperatures, turning leaves, pleasant days and, of course, the continuing opportunity for educational and cultural events sponsored or co-sponsored by the Red Feather Lakes Community Library.

We’re pleased to co-sponsor, with the Red Feather Lakes Writers Group, Readings II, a presentation of short readings by members of the group in many literary forms: poetry, essays, stories and related fiction. As the title infers, this is the second in a continuing annual series, highlighting local mountain literary talent and following a very well-received first program last year. Everyone is welcome, including those interested in stretching their writing talents or otherwise interested in Writers Group membership. Light refreshments will be served. The event is 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Chapel in the Pines Fellowship Hall, on Colorado Highway 74E, a mile east of Red Feather Lakes village.

Following a smashingly successful summer reading program, Pre-school Story Hour has resumed for the fall and winter season, held weekly Thursdays from 11:20 a.m. to 12 p.m. The program allows preschoolers the chance to participate in stories, crafts and music activities as well as some pre-kindergarten skills. Parents and guardians welcome to attend or otherwise browse the library.

As a follow-up to our kickoff technology classes in late August — Computer Basics and Email Basics — we’ll be conducting Internet Basics on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 1 – 2 p.m. Sign-ups are mandatory as the class will be limited to no more than six participants. We’ll be briefly discussing a bit of Internet history, safety, use, browsers and where you can go and what you can do with this still relatively new-fangled tool. Adult beginner level recommended. Hands-on practice with the library laptops provided. And yes, we will answer the question “Who is father (or mother) of the Internet?”

Have some extra time and would like to assist your community? We’re looking for a few good volunteers for circulation work and other in-library help.

The Fire Days (correlating with the Labor Day weekend) Friends of the Library Book Sale will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 3. You’ll find some incredible bargains in book and other media with no price exceeding $1.

This is the final organized book sale through the year, but the library hosts a continual in-house sale year round. There’s a fine selection of books, CDs, VHS and cassette tapes as well as some DVDs. Again, no items priced higher than $1.

September’s art showing in Ruth’s Gallery is by Jack Edward Hicks III, who makes an encore presentation of his artistic, excellent wildlife photography.
