Anticipation is building for the Seventh Annual Buckeye Community Club Quilt and Fabric Arts Show and Sale, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17 and 18 at the historic Buckeye School, 935 West County Road 80, north of Wellington.
Show organizer MaryAnne Martell promises more than quilts: The Buckeye Bistro will serve food and drink and the Buckeye Bakery will feature homemade pies to take home. “In the Buckeye Boutique you just might find a treasure,” Martell said. There will be plenty of time to wander around the grounds to inspect antique tractors at the Jim Flowers Memorial Antique Show.
Karen Kinyon of Double K Diamond Llamas, will treat visitors to a spinning demonstration on Saturday, creating yarn from the 27 llamas and five alpacas she raises. An accomplished fiber artist, she teaches spinning, weaving, knitting, felting, dyeing and fleece preparation from her spacious home studio on North County Road 9, north of Wellington. On Sunday Katherine Urquhart of Kats Meow will conduct a weaving demonstration.
Admission to quilt and fabric arts show is free. However, Martell said donations are appreciated and are used to help preserve and maintain the historic schoolhouse.
This year’s show takes a new direction and will feature of quilts from the collection of Loveland resident Tom Rowland.
“I’m from a family of collectors,” Rowland said. “I’ve always been interested in weaving and the textile arts.”
In pursuing a special interest in Native American baskets, he became aware of quilts as he scoured antique shops. “I was fascinated by the patterns, particularly bold graphic designs as often seen in Amish quilts.” These works often feature dark fabrics, simple designs and sometimes only two or three colors. “I appreciate the fine handiwork and the high number of stitches per inch,” he said.
Rowland has also taken a special interest in quilts with multiple borders and appliqued quilts. Visitors will have a chance to learn the history and origin of the quilts on display.
