DORA offers free damage assessment to help consumers avoid fraudulent contractors

With flood recovery efforts in full swing, many Colorado homeowners and businesses are beginning to assess the damage and hire contractors for repairs.

The Division of Professions and Occupations, part of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), can help consumers avoid fraudulent contractors by providing a free damage assessment. Property owners who have suffered damage can request a no-cost damage assessment to determine the next steps related to the electrical, plumbing and gas systems in a damaged property.

A qualified state inspector will come to the property, survey the extent of damage and provide the property owner with a written report of the findings. The inspector will also explain any necessary steps to get the power safely turned back on or how to start the repair process. Armed with this unbiased, objective information, homeowners will be better equipped to get fair cost estimates from contractors and begin the rebuilding process.

If the property is located in Larimer County, simply call or e-mail the state inspector in the area to schedule an appointment. If the inspector is unavailable consumers may also call DORA at 303-894-2980.

• Rod Roberts 855-454-0071 rod.roberts@state.co.us

A damage assessment may also be performed by a Larimer County inspector. Contact the county’s building department regarding a damage assessment or contact DORA at 303-894-2980 for assistance in navigating state and county inspectors.

DORA reminds consumers to avoid hiring an unregistered plumbing or electrical contractor. To avoid being a victim of fraud, be sure to check registration even if the contractor says they are registered. Verify a registration and check for discipline using the DORA’s Online License Lookup at www.colorado.gov/dora/

Also check the local Better Business Bureau before hiring a contractor.
