Harvest Farms offers fresh produce to the community

Harvest Farms, 4240 East County Road 66 north of Wellington, is offering shares in its community-supported agriculture program. A 209-acre rural rehabilitation program that emphasizes work therapy and assists 72 men on their road to recovery from cycles of chronic homelessness and addiction, the farm grows a wide range of produce from seed.

Much of the food grown at the farm goes to feed participants in the program. The remainder is available to share with the community. For $250, CSA members receive a “share” of what is grown on the farm for 20 weeks between June 2 and Oct. 13. The amount is planned for two people, but many members find their share feeds up to four people. CSA members are also welcome to work off part of their fee in the gardens at the rate of $10 an hour between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. All proceeds from the CSA prgram go to Harvest Farms programs.

Garden supervisor Kelly Ballantyne hopes to encourage those who live in Wellington and the surrounding area to become members. Pick-up is Thursday evenings 5:30-7 p.m. and Friday 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Getting to know the farmers is encouraged. Ballantyne worked in the Denver Rescue Mission’s kitchen for four years and is happy to be engaged in agriculture where he has training and experience.

The number of shares sold is limited by the amount of produce available. Deadline for payment in May 20. In addition to produce, natural Angus beef and eggs may be available. Contact Brad Rhoda at [email protected].

For more information and to sign up for a share, contact Kelly Ballantyne at 720-371-8415 or [email protected].
