The one-day High Plains Landscape Workshop, a fundraiser for Gardens on Spring Creek, takes place Saturday, Feb. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Fort Collins Senior Center, 1200 Raintree Drive.
The annual workshop for homeowners and professionals is designed to promote high-quality, sustainable landscapes that reflect a sense of place in Colorado’s northern Front Range.
Cost for the event is $44 for Gardens on Spring Creek members, $49 for non-members. Late registration (after Feb. 1) is $59. Lunch is included. Register by phone at 970-416-2486 or stop by the Gardens on Spring Creek, 2145 Centre Ave. in Fort Collins.
David Salman, published writer and a hands-on horticulturist with expertise in greenhouse production, plant breeding and all aspects of xeric landscape design, installation and maintenance, will be the featured presenter. Salman is one of the founders of High Country Gardens in Santa Fe, which closed permanently this fall.
Workshop topics include:
• The beauty of native shrubs and small trees in the water-wise landscape
Discover the best long-lived and colorful native shrubs and small flowering trees for creating a water-wise Colorado landscape. Also learn xeric landscaping techniques to place, plant and enhance their growth. They will beautify your landscape and improve habitat for songbirds and beneficial insects
• Flowering perennials and ornamental grasses
Find out how to create pleasing combinations of flowers and grasses for year round color and interest. You’ll be introduced to new varieties as well as new ways to use old favorites
• Fact or fiction: Debunking landscape myths
Are some plants natural insecticides? Can you make a bomb from fertilizer? Does talking to your plants help? Stephanie will share whether or not these and other landscape rumors are true
• Bringing your garden to life
Learn how to attract birds, butterflies and beneficial insects into your garden using native plants to provide food, nectar and habitat. Sally and Anne will share design ideas and a list of plants to help you create bio-diversity in your garden.
