Having seen Marty Nightengale a number of times over the years throughout his incessant touring, I must say that there is surely a different feel to his voice coming from the studio. His presence and versatility carry over well, as well as his unmistakable, high-quality songwriting and musicianship. His debut EP features Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love” alongside four songs written with producer Andy Mac, including the bluesy, sauntering “As I Am.” However, what seems to be lacking on As I Am is Nightengale’s exuberant charm and charisma, something frequently lost in translation from stage to studio. As the EP is a solid debut to be sure, this should speak highly to the artist’s on-stage allure. Catch Marty Nightengale in his element during a slew of shows along the Front Range this month and throughout the summer.
