On April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration is offering a drop-off for potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
There will be three locations for pill disposal:
• Berthoud – Town Hall, 328 Massachusetts Avenue
• Wellington – Family Dollar, 8099 South 6th Street
• Red Feather Lakes – Red Feather Lakes Fire Protection District, 44 Firehouse Lane.
Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The DEA also now advises that the usual methods of disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – both pose potential safety and health hazards.
For additional local prescription drug take-back sites, visit the DEA Office of Diversion Control website at www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov.
