Larimer County commissioners want to hear from the public whether to allow the Ride the Rockies bicycle tour to pedal by Horsetooth Reservoir in June.
They have set a hearing for Monday, Jan. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Larimer County Courthouse first floor Hearing Room, 200 W. Oak St., Fort Collins. At issue is whether the county should make an exception to its special events policy that allows only two events on the same roadway in a 30-day period.
Ride the Rockies is planning to end its week-long, 445-mile non-competitive tour in Fort Collins on Friday, June 15. The proposed route heads down from Estes Park then north from U.S. Highway 34 through Masonville.
However, two events are already scheduled on the roadway near Horsetooth Reservoir in June, and the commissioners would have to grant a waiver to permit Ride the Rockies to use it as well.
More than 2,000 cyclists are expected to make the annual bicycle trek across Colorado beginning June 9. Organizers are expected to officially announce the 2012 Ride the Rockies route Feb. 5.
The Jan. 23 hearing will be televised on local cable television channels and streamed online at http://larimer.org/bcc/broadcast.cfm
