How many times have you heard someone say: “I’m not good at science.” I’ve been guilty of uttering those words myself, usually the night before my child’s science-fair project was due. Here’s the truth: You use science every day.

As home culinary specialist Guy Klinzing explained, “Baking is a science. The measurement of ingredients is necessary to make the dough rise. Baking soda is different from baking powder in that it activates only once.” Painting outdoors has to be done only when the temperature stays above a certain temperature for enough days for the paint to cure. You use science to determine the best way to wash clothes to get certain stains out. You can put oil paint over latex paint but not vice versa. That last one was my own personal science experiment.
Do I sound like a science teacher? Maybe not, but I have a new-found friendship with science. Basically we can’t live without it. Fizz, Boom, Pop is this year’s Summer Reading Program, and even if I can’t explain how a combustible engine works, I’m looking forward to learning more about everyday science. That is what this year’s program is about — demystifying science.
We have lots of enlightening and entertaining programs scheduled for this summer. We are going to learn lots and expand our brain’s capacity. It sounds painful but it probably won’t be. In honor of the abundance of wind we have here in Wellington, kids age 14 and under can enter to win a kite. Entry forms are at the library.
The week of April 13 is National Library Week. Come in and check out our changes. Adults and children can make their own bookmarks.
The library’s story times are April 8 and 12. Bring your preschool age children in to enjoy some stories and a fun craft. The Wellington Public Library Book Club will be reading, “The Kitchen House.” This novel by Kathleen Grissom is about a 7-year-old Irish orphan who finds herself on a Southern tobacco plantation. It has been compared to “The Help,” by Kathryn Stockett. Stop in for your copy.
What books are people talking about? C.J. Box’s “Stone Cold;” Andy Weir’s, “The Martian;” Veronica Roth’s,” Divergent;” and also “The Troop,” by Nick Cutter.
