Letter: Undocumented immigrant deportation is topic of LWV panel discussion

According to a recent Gallup poll, one in six Americans now call immigration the most pressing problem facing the U.S., the largest percentage of Americans to do so since 2006.

To explore what is happening and the issues involved, the League of Women Voters of Larimer County is presenting a panel discussion on “The Undocumented Immigrant; Is Deportation the Only Answer?” on Monday, September 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harmony Public Library, 4616 S. Shields in Fort Collins.

Panelists are Kim Baker-Medina, Fort Collins immigration attorney; Denise Maes, Director of Public Policy for the ACLU of Colorado; and Jennifer Piper, Immigrant Rights Project, American Friends Service Committee.

Critical issues surround undocumented immigrants. Increased border patrols, massive detention and deportation not only bring up questions of human rights abuses but also cost tax payers billions of dollars without actually reforming U.S. immigration policies.

Join us on September 15 to learn about what is happening to undocumented immigrants locally and in Colorado and to join in a discussion of what might be done to reach a more comprehensive and humane U.S. immigration policy.
