Police say domestic violence evidence turned medical call into criminal investigation

LOVELAND, Colo. — A person sought in connection with a Loveland death investigation has been arrested in California after investigators learned the subject planned to return to the United States, according to the Loveland Police Department.
The investigation began last year when Loveland patrol officers responded to a medical call involving a deceased person. Although the death initially appeared natural, police said an officer noticed inconsistencies in statements made by someone who was present at the time.
Those concerns prompted additional investigation and an autopsy by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.
Detectives later learned of a history of domestic violence and uncovered evidence of an argument and physical altercation believed to have occurred the same day as the death, according to police.
Investigators conducted a subsequent interview, and information from that interview combined with findings from the autopsy led detectives to seek an arrest warrant.
Before the warrant could be finalized, however, police said the subject fled the country.
Detectives recently learned the person planned to return to the United States. Loveland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division coordinated with federal authorities and law enforcement in California, where the subject was taken into custody upon arrival.
The person is now awaiting extradition to Colorado.
Police have not publicly identified the arrested person, the deceased individual or the charges involved in the case in the information released Friday. North Forty News is withholding additional characterization of the death until authorities release those details.
Loveland police credited patrol officers, detectives, the Larimer County Coroner’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, federal authorities and California law enforcement with advancing the investigation.
The department also emphasized the impact of domestic violence and encouraged anyone experiencing abuse or concerned about someone else to seek assistance from law enforcement or a trusted local resource.
