Grant award will help Wellington research historic downtown properties

Wellington Main Street, Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce and Town of Wellington received an award of $14,790 from History Colorado, State Historical Fund to fund a professional historian to complete an intensive survey of historic buildings in downtown Wellington. The grant is matched by $4,950 from Wellington Main Street for a total project of $19,740.

The project will include community outreach, in-depth archival research, photographs, inventory, designation recommendations and survey report. Identifying historic structures will help educate the public and encourage the community to celebrate its history and heritage. The results and information will also assist in developing brochures on historic structures and promotion of downtown Wellington.

There will be two public meetings over the course of the project to inform and educate building owners, businesses and the public about the historic assets in Wellington. This information will be available to assist property owners if they wish to move forward with state or national historic designation.

The project will begin in August or September and the deadline for completion is October.

“This grant and project is important to downtown Wellington to better understand and appreciate its historic buildings and create greater community pride,” said Peter Pronko, Wellington Main Street president. “It may also assist local property owners in state or national historic designation, which would make them eligible for state and/or federal tax credits for restoration or renovations.”
