Larimer County Sheriff's Office Citizens' Academy scheduled for this fall

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled its annual Citizens’ Academy for Oct. 1 through Dec. 17. The weekly class, held in the evening, is limited in size to 35 participants on a first come-first served basis. The deadline for applications is Sept. 20. There is a $25 fee to cover the cost of an academy tee shirt and lunch during the field day.

The Citizens’ Academy is designed to give citizens an inside look at the operations of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Every session is packed with behind the scenes information on how each of these units operate presented by the deputies or captains responsible for each area. Sessions include:

• Patrol Operations and Investigations
• Crime Lab
• Emergency Management and Emergency Services
• SWAT and Bomb Squad
• K-9 Unit
• Jail Tour
• Volunteer Opportunities
• Ride-along with a Deputy.

Another highlight is a field day where citizens will participate in live scenarios responding to calls which includes live shooting with simulated ammunition, making a simulated traffic stop and processing a crime scene for evidence.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:
1) 18 years of age
2) No felony convictions
3) No misdemeanor arrests within one year of the start of the academy
4) Must be a resident or business owner in Larimer County
5) Applicants are expected to make a personal commitment to attend all classes.
