Daniels Scholarships now accepting open applications

High school seniors may now apply directly for Daniels Scholarships, through the website www.danielsfund.org. The application deadline is Nov. 29.

This is the first year students have been able to submit their own applications to the Denver-based Daniels Fund online. In previous years, students had to be nominated for the four-year scholarship to any nonprofit college or university in the United States.

To be eligible to become one of this year’s 250 Daniels Scholars, students must be current high school seniors graduating during the 2012-13 academic year from a high school in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah or Wyoming. They must be current residents of the state and at the time of application be U.S. citizens and permanent residents. They must also demonstrate financial need and meet other requirements.

The rigorous selection process includes not only a detailed application but alsoin-person interviews.

The Daniels Scholarship was established by cable pioneer Bill Daniels to seek out outstanding young people who possess the passion to succeed, a willingness to work hard, and a commitment to giving back to the community. The scholarship is not a “full ride,” but is supplemental to all other financial aid resources, including Pell Grants, available to the student. The Daniels Scholarship covers all required tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and a variety of other expenses, after other financial resources have been applied. Daniels Scholars also receive a laptop computer and a printer.
