Sheriff’s Office warns of violent threats used to pressure victims into paying scammers
Larimer County residents are being warned about a disturbing scam making the rounds again, according to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the scheme uses fear and intimidation to pressure victims into sending money after online interactions.
In recent cases, individuals reported chatting with scammers through escort or dating websites. When the victim chose to end the conversation or decline a transaction, the scam escalated. Victims began receiving graphic and violent images, along with threats against themselves or their families if they refused to pay.
Scammers often claim to be affiliated with gangs or organized crime groups and may present personal details about the victim to make threats feel more credible. Law enforcement says this information is often easily obtained through publicly available sources, including social media and online databases.
The tactic is designed to trigger fear and urgency, but officials emphasize that these threats are part of a broader pattern of scams seen periodically across the country, including Northern Colorado.
Residents who receive threatening messages are urged not to engage with the scammer, not to send money or gift cards, and to report the incident immediately to local law enforcement. Sharing awareness with friends and family can also help prevent others from becoming victims.
Staying informed about these tactics is one way Northern Colorado residents can protect themselves and their communities from evolving online threats.
