The village of Red Feather Lakes has been around for a long time but until now there was never a sign directing visitors to the main street of this charming mountain hideaway.
The classy new sign at the corner of Prairie Divide Road (67J) and 74E leading into town was installed recently after a two-and-a-half year effort to raise funds and complete the planning, design and installation process.
Natural moss rock pillars suspend an arrow with red fletching. A golden arrowhead hangs from the shaft of the arrow pointing toward the main street of town.
Lon Hughes, chair of the Red Feather Public Advisory Committee, spearheaded the project. “It took longer than I thought and it was quite a process,” he said. “The sign had to be approved by the county. An architect was hired to create the design, and we raised the funds through donations from community members and businesses.”
Hughes has a 62-year history at Red Feather Lakes, dating back to 1954, when he was 6-months old and his parents bought property there. A military man, he lived in several different places but Red Feather was always an anchor. “I never missed a summer at Red Feather,” Hughes said.
Eight years ago he moved there permanently. He owns and operates Summit Real Estate in the village.
Hughes says the village has been struggling for the last few years but that things are looking up with the arrival of a new restaurant, Basil 181 and an Ace Hardware store. Summit Secrets, a gift shop also opened in the village this spring.
