Community meeting March 13 to discuss reduction of hours at Red Feather Lakes post office

The U.S. Postal Service will host a community meeting starting at 4 p.m. on March 13 to discuss the future of Red Feather Lakes’ post office.

Possibilities on the table as part of the USPS’s Post Plan include reducing hours of operation and studying closing the post office and opening an alternate location in a local business. Another option to be studied would include closing the post office and using roadside mailboxes, with the rural carrier handling most of the products and services — including the sale of stamps and boxes — the post office offers.

The meeting will be held at the Red Feather Lakes Library, 71 Firehouse Lane in Red Feather Lakes village. The USPS will make a decision sometime in 2013.

USPS lost $15.9 billion in fiscal year 2012 and recently reduced service hours at the Livermore post office. USPS is expected to reduce hours of service at more than 13,000 post offices across the country, including Masonville and Carr.

Options for the 13,000 post offices on the Post Plan list include reduced hours, complete closure, partial closure and possible relocation of the post office to a private business.
