The first firefighters arrived to find a large concrete block and wood-frame building with fire through the roof. Due to the large amount of fire in the roof area and no immediate life safety issues firefighters attacked the blaze from the outside and used ladder trucks to spray water from above.

During operations, firefighters, CSUPD officers, faculty and students evacuated horses from nearby buildings as a precaution.
Smoke from the fire blanketed neighborhoods south and east of the campus. Firefighters remained on scene through the night extinguishing hot-spots.
